Duo harpists Nancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn have performed together in harp ensembles and orchestras for twenty-five years. They share a similar educational background, studying with Alice Chalifoux at the Cleveland Institute of Music and at the Salzedo School in Camden, Maine.
Shortly after forming the duo in 2000 in order to promote the music of Carlos Salzedo, they were awarded a Mellon Foundation grant, as coordinated by The Toledo Symphony, to research and prepare Salzedo’s little-known duo harp repertoire for public performance. While researching this prominent harpist/composer/pedagogue, the duo coached with Salzedo’s protegé and successor, Alice Chalifoux. Their research uncovered a number of unpublished duo harp works that are now in their repertoire. In 2002 they performed at the Eighth World Harp Congress in Geneva, Switzerland. Their recording of “Clair de lune” was heard by more than 6 million television viewers when it was featured as part of the background score of an episode of the day-time drama The Young and the Restless. They released their first CD, “Short Stories: A Collection of Music for Two Harps” in June of 2004 on the Azica label, and have just released their second disc for Azica. The duo performed at the Tenth World Harp Congress in Amsterdam in July of 2008 and at the American Harp Society’s 2008 National Conference in Dearborn, Michigan. They have presented concerts and master classes across the United States, including appearances in Tulsa, Omaha, Philadelphia, South Florida, Atlanta, and at the Interlochen Arts Academy. The repertoire of the duo has expanded to include works of other 20th century French composers as well as a number of contemporary compositions, including both transcriptions and works specifically composed for harp duo.
In addition to their work together in the duo, both Lendrim and Guinn hold principal harp positions with Ohio orchestras and maintain active teaching roles. Currently, Lendrim is Principal Harpist with The Toledo Symphony and is a member of the music faculty at the University of Toledo, Heidelberg College and the Saratoga Harp Colony. Guinn is Principal Harpist with the Akron Symphony and the Opera Cleveland Orchestra and is a faculty member at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA and Baldwin Wallace Conservatory in Berea, OH. In addition, they have both performed with The Cleveland Orchestra and The Philadelphia Orchestra. They retain active rosters of private students, passing on the Salzedo tradition to a new generation.
